Hey, we all want to look good at the Beach!

Why do you see Lifeguards walking around with white (or Pink) noses? Zinc Oxide, most likely. Sunscreens can be classified into two categories: chemical and physical. Chemical sunscreens absorb into the skin and absorb UV rays to protect the skin from the sun. Chemical sunscreens also use chemical UV filters.

Physical sunscreens, those that use zinc oxide as their UV filters, are commonly called "sunblock" because they prevent UV radiation from reaching the skin. Sunblock sits on top of the skin and reflects the UV rays away.

If you can see the product (but not the skin underneath), you are most likely looking at a ‘physical’ sunblock. The product you see on a person’s nose is a physical barrier, like a wall, between the skin and the UV rays. It sits on top of the skin and is therefore visible. Some lifeguards prefer to wear this, particularly if they get frequent face/nose sunburns, as physical sun blocks are supposedly better than chemical sunscreens and don’t require time to become ‘active.’
